The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) organized a six-day exhibition on Higher Education Science and Technology that began from 31st August-5th September 2020. The following are events that TERNET participated during the 6 days course of the exhibition. DAY 1 On the first day, we were introduced to the profile of Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) as the organizers of the exhibition and their various activities. We were also introduced to the main theme of the exhibition and the various activities that were due to take place during the 5-day event. Afterwards the organizers welcomed everyone and the exhibitions began. We began discuss the agendas that we came with for the exhibition and decide which agendas to start with. We started with visiting the other pavilions to meet with PROs and IT staff for introducing TERNET and activities to them as per one of the agendas. DAY 2 The second day involved TERNET exhibitors visiting the members’ pavilions and meeting with their IT personnel. The aim was to establish connections and enquire feedback on the services we provide to them. We also introduced them to our TERNET Members portal, a system that brings together all TERNET members under one roof where they can communicate their enquiries and request services directly to the secretariat. We managed to demonstrate the members’ portal with IT staffs from member institutions such as HKMU, SFUCHAS, MWECAU, IAA and SAUT. In order to foster our relationships with our member institutions, we also requested the PROs from our members to follow our social media handles. Service booklets were also distributed to the IT staff to check out our services and for more reference. DAY 3- OFFICIAL OPENING The official opening of the exhibitions was on Wednesday .The opening was graced by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Dr. Leonard Akwilapo. Dr. Leonard Akwilapo formerly our Trustees Board Chairman began visiting the pavilions to see what they have displayed and converse in the activities done by the universities. We were privileged to have him visit our pavilion briefly. He met our Chief Executive Secretary Dr. Magreth Mushi and congratulated us on the progress we have made so far and insisted that the government will provide their full support in expediting our mission. During his opening remarks, he congratulated TCU on its role in efforts to promote quality in higher education in the country. Noting that TCU plays a practical implementation of the national agenda of the fifth phase government by ensuring the quality of higher education that fits the labor market. He insisted that the higher education institutions to ensure they provide knowledge and skills to students that prepare them to face current global challenges. The PS also urged higher education and research institutions and stakeholders to strive to play all their key roles such as teaching, consultancy and research and support. We were also visited by administrators from our member institutions and officials from government bodies such as TCU, TCRA, NECTA and the Ministry of Education in our pavilion to discuss on various topics that promote a mutual understanding on quality assurance on issues of education and research. On this day, we provided internet connectivity in order to support our members’ activities taking place at the exhibition such as online students’ admission for the new academic year, consultancy and other related activities. With the help from our partners CTV, we installed an internet link of 50mbps capacity around the entrance. DAY 4 The fourth day involved visiting our members’ booth to demonstrate more on the Members portal and social media interaction with our member institutions. We also got a few positive and negative reviews on the services and products we offer to our members. We met with IT staffs from SAUT, SFUCHAS and Marian University to discuss on quality assurance and prices for services such as OSIS, SSL, video conference and Bandwidth. We all agreed that it is paramount to be part of a vibrant and supportive research and education community that will continue to reward them with quality products and services and better terms. DAY 5 This day involved welcoming visitors to our pavilion to discuss and learn on the essence of TERNET, what we do and the role we play in development of education and research in our country. We got a number of visitors including students, researchers, academicians etc. who were so interested in education and research issues. We made them realize that TERNET as a community provides a number of network and associated services that support education and research activities for higher education and research institutions. FINAL DAY This closing ceremony was graced by the TCU Chairman Prof. Makunya Nkunya. Prof. Nkunya made assurance that TCU as a regulatory body for university education in Tanzania plays a key role of assuring the quality of education offered by universities in the country. “To realize its mission TCU conducts audits for monitoring the quality of university systems and to sustain the levels set by the commission,” He said. He also said, “higher education is key to the country’s sustenance of the recently attained middle-income status and for propelling the economy to greater heights towards the attainment for an upper middle-income economy level in the near future”. Finally, he congratulated all exhibitors on their active participation and making the exhibition productive and prosperous. Lastly, the organizers issued to all exhibitors with certificates of participation at the exhibition and welcomed them to another exhibition for next year.
